Extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) or hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an interstitial lung disease associated with repeated exposure to a wide range of inhaled organic dusts and related occupational allergens, especially bird and fungal proteins. We focus on the diagnostic and prognostic findings related to the use of BAL in the management of EAA patients. The presentation of EAA varies from p...

Extrinsic allergic alveolitis: a disease commoner in non-smokers.

The smoking habits of 18 patients with extrinsic allergic alveolitis, 22 with cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, and 75 patients with sarcoidosis were compared with the smoking habits of the normal population of the Prairie Region for 1973. The patients were diagnosed at the same two hospitals over the four-year period November 1971--75 and were of comparable age. Non-smoking was significantly a...

Plasma lactate dehydrogenase: a marker of disease activity in cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis and extrinsic allergic alveolitis?

Total plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity may be elevated in cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis (CFA) and extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA), and may be a useful monitor of disease progress. In a retrospective, primary referral centre study, we compared LDH at presentation, prior to bronchoalveolar lavage BAL, and after treatment and follow-up with changes in pulmonary function, in patie...
